I have been drawn to portraiture ever since I opened a book of Yousuf Karsh portraits when I was in my early 20s. I found his portraits of world leaders and celebrities deeply moving, both for the quality of light he created, and for his insight into the soul of his subjects.
A portrait reveals a person's essence. Whether I am creating a portrait for a baby, a child, an individual, a couple or a family, my goal is to capture the inner spirit of my subjects. My intent is to create an atmosphere that allows them to show the camera who they truly are. This may mean traveling to someone's residence, workplace, or favorite park, or photographing in my studio. It means in-depth communication with my subjects to create an atmosphere for a portrait that evokes their true nature. It means capturing a moment that may contain joy, reflection, whimsy, love, connection or introspection. Every session emanates a different quality. |
